A crash involving a state vehicle and a private commercial semi-truck left two people, a husband and wife who were in the semi, injured and in the hospital.
According to authorities, the accident occurred when the semi crossed the centerline of the road, forcing a Nebraska Department of Roads pickup off the highway and in to the ditch. The driver of the pickup was not injured; however, it appears the trucker also lost control and hit an electric pool, knocking out power. The truck wound up on its side.
The driver of the truck was taken to a hospital in Omaha to be evaluated for a possible injury to his head. Although the extent of the injury is not known, residents of Lincoln are well aware that such injuries can be quite serious. The wife of the driver had something wrong with her wrist.
Police think that the trucker may have been traveling too quickly to maneuver his trick safely, although he was not cited for speeding. Authorities also mentioned that the truck had, earlier on its route, been cited for being overweight, although some adjustments at the weigh station had reportedly corrected the issue. It is important to note that truck drivers do not always have full control and responsibility over the weight of their loads.
This story serves as an important reminder to Nebraskans that, while truck driver injuries are by no means limited to collisions and other problems on the road, such accidents do raise workers' compensation issues. Like anyone else, a Lincoln, Neberaska, truck driver doing his or her job is on the clock for his trucking company and can collect workers' compensation benefits for any accident on the road. These benefits would include coverage for medical bills and some income replacement.
